About Chef Johannes De Bruijn
Zimbabwean born chef Johannes de Bruijn has developed a signature style of contemporary cuisine drawing on childhood memories of his grandmother’s cooking on the farm blended with classic French technique, an obsession with bold Asian flavour and a true passion for modern gastronomy.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Johannes’ pursuit of a career in hospitality took him to South Africa where he honed his skills in some of Johannesburg’s leading restaurants and boutique hotels. But it was as Sous Chef at the famed Cube Tasting Kitchen, where Johannes found the freedom to experiment with techniques and flavours which allowed him to develop his signature style of modern gastronomy.
As Executive Chef of Winehouse Restaurant at the Ten Bompas Boutique Hotel, Johannes soon achieved a loyal following of discerning diners with his ever-evolving menu and passion for sourcing unique ingredients. The restaurant was named The Best Fine Dining Restaurant 2017 by the Restaurant Association of South Africa and nominated for Restaurant of The Year for 2017 & 2018. Winehouse also received a One Plate rating in the South African Gourmet Guide 2016/2017 for Exceptional Cuisine.
Johannes now returns home to Zimbabwe to open Restaurant Johannes De Bruijn, a unique concept on the Zimbabwean food scene. Restaurant JDB aims to foster a passion for locally sourced ingredients and organically grown produce and showcase them utilising Johannes’ flair and creativity.
